March 2019
In these days, digital transformation problems are widely acknowledged across different sectors and industries. This is surprising as digital transformation has been a board room topic for quite some while now.
One would have thought that business leaders have become accustomed to dealing with large scale digital business change initiatives. But, it seems that the truth is far from it.
Rather shocking statistics about the state of Digital Transformation have been coming out of Germany just recently.
Survey results
A survey by the German trade magazine Handelsblatt reveals that many business leaders are struggling big time to get to grips with the challenges of digital transformation programmes:
Only 13% of leaders check their internal business processes before embarking on Digital Transformation.
This is despite the fact that 65% of respondents don’t really understand the processes in their own organisation.
Whilst many businesses invest in Digital Transformation initiatives, they actually don’t understand what and how to change.
58% of business leaders state problems and are unsure where to start. They fail to devise an appropriate strategy.
56% believe that Digital Transformation is a waste of time and resources.
Though, one third of businesses spent more than 500k Euros for digital change programmes in the last year.
The focus of their DX initiatives is on AI and machine learning. Not surprising, when you understand the structure of the German economy.
However, there is a good degree of uncertainty (74%) where transformation actually makes sense for their businesses.
Only by 33% of leaders entertained a possible remedy for some of the problems i.e. pulling in their employees and staff .
In short, this is a very poor state of affairs for a largely industrialised country.
